A home that rarely comes to market

Very few homes in historic central Madrid offer all of this: a protected 1910 palace building, a corner apartment with twelve balconies over an open square, views of the Royal Palace, and the Opera four minutes' walk away. It is sold fully furnished and ready to move into. On the square where Velázquez was buried.

The building

A landmark of Habsburg Madrid

The palace building dates from 1910. Between 1920 and 1922 architect Cayo Redón y Tapiz remodelled it for Ricardo Augustín, who lived here, adding two floors and the medieval-style tower while keeping the symmetry of the façade. The building is protected, and its painted façade was restored in 2025 to its original design. It keeps its carved stone entrance with the family coat of arms and the architect's name, stained-glass staircase, marble floors and original lift. Plaza de Ramales stands on the site of the old church of San Juan Bautista, one of Madrid's oldest parishes, where Diego Velázquez was buried in 1660. The church was demolished in 1810 on the orders of Joseph Bonaparte to open up the area around the Royal Palace, and the painter's remains have never been found. A cross in the middle of the square marks the spot.

The Virgen de los Dolores

On the corner of the façade with Calle Vergara is the niche of the Virgen de los Dolores, one of the few corner shrines still preserved in Madrid. It opens from inside the apartment, and its care belongs to this home. Local tradition holds that the Virgin protected the house during the Civil War, and neighbours still leave flowers at the corner in the morning.

Layout

Layout

The corner living and dining room has its original ceiling mouldings, hand-carved wood panelling and a fireplace. Next to it, a study works as a guest bedroom. The kitchen, also handmade, is exterior, with an island and three balconies, a waste disposal unit, a hob with integrated extractor, built-in coffee machine, microwave and warming drawer. There are two bedrooms and three full bathrooms. The principal bedroom has a fireplace, dressing room and a bathroom with balcony, freestanding bath, double basin, steam shower and separate WC. There is also a separate laundry room. The windows are new and fully soundproof, with one-way glass from the outside. The trees in the square are evergreen, so the apartment keeps its privacy all year. There is a built-in sound system in every room and a single switch at the entrance for all the lights.
